The tendency is to view the lyrics as simply a part of the song. The reality is to understand the lyric as a monologue within the story that is delivered musically. Beautiful vocal quality is hard to compete with, yet it is important to remember that a great performance is not solely dependant on a beautiful voice. Many of the most memorable musical theatre performances have been delivered by non-singers or singers with voices that were far from beautiful. Rex Harrison (My Fair Lady), Ethel Merman (Annie Get Your Gun), Jimmy Durante (The New Yorkers). If you are not familiar with these names look them up, after all, the history of musical theatre is part of the foundation of this much loved form of entertainment.
