Digital workbook, recorded masterclass and lifetime access
The audition problem
Most actors prepare by memorizing lines.
They learn the words, decide how each line should sound and walk into
the audition hoping they have guessed correctly.
Then the questions begin:
Those questions keep your attention on yourself. But acting is not
about presenting your lines correctly. It is about using the words on
the page to affect another person.
They ask, “Why am I saying this—and what do I need to do to the other
character using these words?”
A process you can repeat
Walk into your next audition knowing what to do.
The Professional Actor’s Workbook helps you move beyond memorized
dialogue and build the inner life, relationships and intentions
that make a performance feel real.
Instead of trying to manufacture a performance, you will learn how
to create the truth that motivates it.
- Understand why the character says each line.
- Identify what the character needs from the other person.
- Create emotional truth instead of indicating emotion.
- Recognize the transitions and moments inside the scene.
- Use the freedom of improvisation within scripted material.
- Build a process you can use again and again.
A different way to prepare
Stop playing the story. Start living the moment.
The difference is not more dramatic gestures or a clever way of saying
the line. The difference is where you place your attention.
The common approach
- Memorize the words.
- Decide how the lines should sound.
- Try to produce the right emotion.
- Worry about appearance and physical movement.
- Guess what casting wants.
The professional approach
- Create the character’s reality.
- Understand what motivates each line.
- Focus on affecting the other character.
- Allow truthful physical and emotional responses to emerge.
- Make specific, defensible choices.
What you will learn
Create performances that feel lived, not performed.
The workbook and masterclass teach you how to approach the script
from the inside out.
Why, not how
Replace “How should I say this?” with the far more useful question:
“Why am I saying this?”
Character intention
Identify what you need to do to the other character using the words
the writer has given you.
Emotional backstory
Go beyond what happened and create how the character was affected
by what happened.
Truthful listening
Learn why acting, like sales, depends less on delivering words and
more on listening and responding.
Audition relationships
Create a believable relationship with the reader or scene partner,
even when auditioning alone.
Scripted freedom
Bring the spontaneity and responsiveness of improvisation into
prepared scripted material.
The giving actor
Great acting is never only about you.
One of the greatest compliments an actor can receive is to be called a
giving actor.
A giving actor gives the other performer what they need to succeed in
the scene. The other actor gives back. The relationship becomes active,
specific and alive.
That exchange is what audiences often describe as chemistry.
need for success. Together, we make magic.”
Built for today’s audition world
Virtual auditions require you to create more—not less.
In a live audition, the room gives you a physical place, another
person and an immediate environment.
In a self-tape, you must create those realities for yourself.
Casting directors frequently see actors reciting lines in front of
a blank wall without creating a believable place, relationship or
immediate need.
This process teaches you to create the reality of the scene even
when your reader is off camera, remote or not physically present.
- Create a believable sense of place.
- Make the unseen scene partner real.
- Keep your attention out of the camera and on the relationship.
- Put organic truth in your eyes.
- Give casting a reason to keep watching.
Not one scene.

Created by working professionals
Created by Working Professionals
The Professional Actor’s Workbook and accompanying Character Creation Masterclass were created by Paul Tinder and Vaughn Taylor, founders of Be Scene Acting.
Paul and Vaughn are professional SAG-AFTRA actors, writers, producers and acting coaches with more than 50 years of combined experience. Their work spans film, television, commercials, industrial productions and the stage, with productions available on platforms including Prime, Tubi and Starz.
Throughout their careers, they had the opportunity to learn from and work alongside some of the most accomplished storytellers in American film and television.
Their mentors included Garry Marshall, the celebrated creator of Happy Days and director of films including Pretty Woman, Beaches, Overboard, Runaway Bride and The Princess Diaries; Larry Gelbart, the award-winning writer and producer behind M*A*S*H, Tootsie and A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum; and Gene Reynolds, the Emmy-winning producer and director whose work helped shape landmark television series including M*A*S*H, Lou Grant and Room 222.
That professional lineage continues to influence how Paul and Vaughn teach today.
Their training is grounded in the standards and expectations of the professional entertainment industry, but it is delivered in a practical, encouraging environment. Actors are given permission to explore, take risks, make mistakes and develop a repeatable process they can trust.
Paul and Vaughn do not simply teach actors how to deliver lines. They teach them how to create truthful characters, live honestly in the moment and prepare for auditions with the discipline and specificity expected of working professionals.
Professional training should not be limited by geography.

The industry reality
They may not need another actor. Your job is to make them want you.
There are enough actors to play every part ever written.
Casting does not owe any actor a role. Your opportunity is to bring
preparation, truth, specificity and generosity to the audition in a way
that makes your work difficult to dismiss.
You cannot control whether you match every detail of someone’s original
vision. You can control whether you create a fully lived, professionally
prepared audition.
